As a World War II fan, there is nothing better than when a World War II museum on the scale of the American Heritage Museum opens less than an hour from your home. And that's right,

Boston Military Museum

No matter how close (or far) you live, the American Heritage Museum is worth a visit, no matter how long it takes you to get here. The pieces in this museum are large, beautifully restored, and rare. Some of them you will not be able to see anywhere else in the world.

National Wwii Museum In New Orleans

The American Heritage Museum opened to the public in May 2019 and is dedicated to all things military transport. Its vast collection is housed in 65,000 square feet of space in suburban Massachusetts.

The American Heritage Museum is part of the Collings Foundation - a non-profit educational foundation focused on the preservation and display of historic transportation-related artifacts. Yes, that's a mouthful. Let's break it down into small pieces.

In 2013, the family of Jacques M. Littlefield (a private collector) selected the Collings Foundation as the recipient of his large collection of tanks and other military vehicles. From this large donation (of over 200 cars) came the idea for the American Heritage Museum.

The American Heritage Museum is located at 568 Main Street in Hudson, Massachusetts. It is only a 45 minute drive from all the WWII sites in downtown Boston and less than half an hour from Worcester.

The American Heritage Museum is open from 10am to 5pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only.

While the American Heritage Museum covers all the way from World War I to the current conflict (with a little Civil War thrown in there), the majority of the collection focuses on World War II.

If you love tanks as much as I do, you definitely need to go to WWII Weekend in Reading, Pennsylvania. You will see tank parades and tons of tanks in action over the three days.

You will also have the opportunity to pick up, feel and wear historical war items as well as spend some time talking to the many enthusiastic volunteers. You will see a series of various artefacts from the Second World War and get close to some of the most important forms of transportation and destruction in the war.

If you are interested in WWII transportation you must visit the American Heritage Museum. This place features anything and everything related to wings, wheels, ships and weapons.

The World War II section of the American Heritage Museum takes up the vast majority of the exhibition space here. In this section there are subsections divided by important points, specific topics, and many theaters of the war.

This section uses a video presentation detailing the events and timeline of World War II. It includes artefacts such as Hitler's favorite Mercedes G4 staff car and a German Panzer.

Also in this section you can see Nazi and Japanese military uniforms and other important weapons and artefacts.

This small section contains three American pieces: a Sherman tank, a Sherman Turret Trainer, and the front half of a 1942 Buick Super.

Entering the bowels of the museum you will first come across the section on North Africa. In this section you will find American and British tanks, motorcycles and armored vehicles, and more.

Moving forward will take you to the Italian Campaign. Here you can see American and German cars, weapons, and, my favorite, German Schwimmwagen - a small "duck boat" like car that can move both land and water.

The International Museum Of World War Ii

At the heart of the massive part of the Second World War is Clash of Steel. This small section contains only two tanks - a Russian T-34/85 and a German Panther - but it includes its own video presentation. The purpose of this video is to show and compare the differences between these two tanks and how they performed in war and did a good job at it. There is a fire.

In this section you will find mainly German weapons - tank destroyers, anti-tank guns, rocket launchers, etc. However, you can also see a Russian heavy machine gun and a Russian T-34 tank. This one is called Mickey Mouse and is one of its kind on display in North America.

The section on D-Day is always a favorite of mine, and mainly shows British tanks and guns. However, it also features an American ship Higgins - a true survivor of the landings on the beaches of Normandy.

In this section you can also look inside the Cromwell I and learn about Churchill's Crocodile, a flamethrower tank.

The American Heritage Museum's section on the Battle of the Bulge features US tanks such as the M4A3E2 Sherman "Jumbo" complete with battle markings, and German and American anti-tank weapons.

The small section of the crossing of the Rhine shows US and UK tanks and an American Hellcat tank destroyer.

With no particular part in itself, the rusted remains of a German U-Boat sits between the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle for Berlin.

As the war progressed, so did the American Heritage Museum's collection. In this section you will see a Russian tank and a Russian tank destroyer, as well as a German Messerschmitt fighter.

There is only one piece of transport in this section but many other pieces of war equipment. Here you will find anti-aircraft battery support, guided missiles, anti-aircraft guns, and other pieces used by the Reich for defense.

As for the vehicle in this section, it is a Sd.Kfz. 8 German 12 ton personnel carriers and actually used in the 1967 film WWII

If you are into WWII aircraft, definitely check out my post on WWII sites in Washington DC. Here you will see some great planes from World War II including the Enola Gay - the B-29 Superfortress bomber that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

Imperial War Museum

In the American Heritage Museum's Liberation section, you can see the American Greyhound M8 armored car.

And although this is the only car in this section, you can learn more about the Holocaust here and see some key artifacts.

In the last subsection from the Second World War is the section on the Pacific War. Here you will find American, British and Japanese cars and weapons. Among them, the only known Japanese self-propelled howitzer left in existence.

The coolest thing the American Heritage Museum offers is the chance to drive one of the WWII tanks yourself. As a complete and total amateur.

Due to the nature of the museum, it is funded entirely by visitor admissions, donations, and private funding. So they offer some very unique fundraising methods.

The American Heritage Museum and the Collings Foundation are big on immersive experiences as a way to better learn about history, and I couldn't agree more. For years they offered the opportunity to fly in real WWII aircraft (such as the B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell, TF-51D Mustang, and TP-40N Warhawk).

Now, you can participate in the American Heritage Museum's Tank Driving Experience Program and drive a real WWII tank. Choose from either the M24 Chaffee or the M4A3 Sherman tank.

These experiences are 100% tax-deductible gifts and reservations are required. Also, you should probably know how to drive a bat. Or, in my case, learn how to drive a stick from scratch with the sole purpose of eventually driving a WWII tank.

In addition to the museum and tank driving experience, the American Heritage Museum also hosts various events throughout the year. Some of these events are:

Saving Private Ryan (1998): One of the best WWII (and D-Day) movies out there. See many of the vehicles mentioned in this post such as the Flak 38 anti-aircraft gun and the Higgins Boat, among others.

The Dirty Dozen (1967): Academy Award-winning film based on the true story of a World War II unit of 12 assassins convicted on a suicide mission to kill.

Fury (2014): If you are into all WWII tanks, you must watch this movie. What do I say? You've probably already seen it. The story is about a Sherman tank and its crew of five (led by Brad Pitt) fighting their way through Germany in 1945. And it's amazing!
